DOUG’S “ BLOG “ – SEPTEMBER. As our 2008 season draws to a close I would like to thank all those people who have made  it such a success. All players, coaches, managers, support staff and spectators have been wonderful in promoting and developing our game here on the Sunshine Coast and indeed throughout SE Queensland. A special mention must go to Steve Dowsett ( Competition Manager ) Russell Sinclair ( Junior Stingrays State manager ) ,Noel Stockall and Ian Brown ( Referees coordinators ) as well as Darryn Hoare ( Admin. Officer ) for all their hard work this season – mostly behind the scenes.

Our under 12 end of season Muster for the “ John Connolly Trophy “ was a resounding success with Noosa Reds overcoming a determined Caloundra Gold in a close final. A top effort by all 9 teams that competed on the day. It has been decided that this initiative will now be  a permanent fixture on the SCJRU calendar.

On the day a number of Stingrays selectors were noting a group of players who may be invited to join a Stingrays under 13 squad  towards the end of the year . This squad will not be finalised to after the development rounds at the start of the 2009 season.

Our finals for  the under 13’s to under 15’s  was well supported on 30 August with the draw in the under 14 ( 12 a side ) being one of the many highlights . Questions are now being asked as to whether  Nambour can go all the way and take out the under 16/17 final next weekend.

Andreas Foondun and the boys from Mt. Creek SHS have been training and preparing themselves for the quarter finals of the Ballymore Cup at Ballymore this Thursday

( 7 th. ). We wish them every success in their match against Helensvale and hope that they progress through the semis to win the final in a few weeks. Would be great to have a coast team win the Cup two years in a row . – ( SCGS were the 2007 champions ).

School rugby is still very much on the go with both primary and secondary comps. in full swing.

This year in the year 4/5 Mini competition we have 28 teams playing in a regular Wednesday afternoon series  ( Woombye SS , Bli Bli SS , Caloundra RUFC ) and 4 teams in a Tuesday afternoon  Round Robin non regular ( Kawana SHS ) .This is an increase of over 10 teams in this age division from 2007.Rugby  has a bright future on the coast if this growth continues and every indication is that it will , thanks to a dedicated group of teachers ( both primary and secondary ) who volunteer their time to provide their students with a broad range of  extra curricula sporting activities.
